ALN
Additional Learning Needs Educational Tribunal (ALNET) (Wales) 2018
The Welsh Government has passed new legislation, the Additional Learning Needs (WALES) Act which replaces all previous legislation and guidance about special educational needs.
As part of the Additional Learning Needs Educational Tribunal (ALNET) (Wales) 2018 and the Additional Learning Needs Code, the term ‘special educational needs’ (SEN)has been replaced with ‘additional learning needs’ (ALN).
The definition of additional learning needs is very clear and covers those pupils who:
- have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age
- have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of the educational facilities generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream maintained schools
From September 2021, all children who are newly identified as having additional learning needs will be managed under the new ALN Act.
Those children who have already been identified as having SEN will transfer to the new system from January 2022.
Universal Provision
In Dinas Powys Primary School, all children have access to high quality teaching and learning provision to ensure that individual needs are met. When planning, teachers set suitable and differentiated learning tasks and respond to children’s diverse learning needs.
Teachers take account of these requirements and make provision, where necessary, to support individuals or groups of children, enabling them to participate effectively in all activities.
During their time with us ,some pupils may need periods of additional support through programmes such as Language Links, Catch Up Literacy or ELSA. These programmes are also part of our Universal Provision, available to all pupils at the point when required. A pupil who receives such focused periods of support is not deemed to have ALN.
